Fun Events For The Whole Family All Summer Long at Hopewell Theater

Grown-ups aren’t the only ones having a great time at Hopewell Theater – kids will have plenty of fun options this summer that the whole family can enjoy.

Want to catch a movie with the kids, but don’t want to stay out too late? We offer Family Matinees one Saturday a month at 4:30pm so you’re back in time for dinner and bedtime. Witness the wonders of a chocolate factory with Willy Wonka on May 25th. Experience two short but beloved films back to back with The Red Balloon and White Mane on June 22nd. Explore the mystery of The Phantom Tollbooth on July 6th. And on August 3rd, go Back to the Future with everyone’s favorite classic.

Saturday Afternoon Cartoons are a great way for kids to see the old originals. Besides Superman, you can also bring the kids to meet the Looney Tunes gang with Bugs Bunny and Friends on June 8th at 1:00pm. If that doesn’t fill your appetite for the oldies, bring the family to our Father’s Day Brunch Club to see the great father/daughter film, To Kill a Mockingbird on Sunday, June 16th.

For those with infants and toddlers, or those who want to enjoy the movies in a sensory-friendly environment where the lights are turned up and the sound is turned down, we’re proud to offer our Crybaby Matinees at 11:00am on Thursdays. Latecomers are permitted and so is walking around, talking, and noise. Bring babes-in-arms, infants in strollers, carriers, and children of any age!

There are Crybaby counterparts to our Family Matinees, including Willy Wonka on May 23rd, The Red Balloon and White Mane on June 20th, The Phantom Tollbooth on July 11th, and Back to the Future on August 1st. But there’s even more. See the gorgeous, watercolor-styled film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, directed by a co-founder of Studio Ghibil, on May 16th. On May 30th, listen to the musical rise of The Kid in Purple Rain. On July 18th experience the visual riff of Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Then enjoy the Superman Cartoons on July 25th and August 15th, or during their Saturday Afternoon Cartoons times on July 20th and August 17th at 1:00pm.

Movies and shows aren’t all that’s coming this summer, though. Get in the groove and bring your dancing shoes to our Family Fun Concerts where we invite bands and singers to rock out on our stage one Saturday a month at 12:00pm. We’ve got the sibling stars, Little Rockers, coming in on May 18th, award-winning Steve Pullara on June 29th, and the indie pop-rock band Bee Parks and the Hornets on August 3rd.

Finally, kids can take the stage themselves in our Summer Stars Theater Camp from Monday, July 8th through Friday, July 19th, 1:30-5:00pm. Every afternoon will be filled with fun, hands-on theater arts activities and a final, big Showcase where the kids are the stars. Snacks and supplies are included. Campers also get two free tickets – one for them and one for a parent or guardian – when Traveling Lantern Theater Company visits on Saturday, July 13th to bring us the stage play, My Mother, the Astronaut. Only campers will have the opportunity to “meet the actors” afterwards, but everyone is invited to the play.
